Bulletin Spring‧Summer, 2008

workplace culture of mainland China, CUHK pioneered the China Career Development Award Programme in 1997. Riding on its success, the programme was expanded to overseas cities in 2006 and renamed as the Global Internship Programme, which now consists of a mainland part and an overseas part. Programme participants are given internship opportunities during the summer break at mainland or overseas organizations according to their preferences and fields of study. Students on the mainland programme are offered internships in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Shenyang, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Ningbo, and other cities. Business sectors providing internship opportunities include advertising, airlines, banking, environmental protection, finance, hotel management, media, pharmaceutical and health. The overseas programme offers students exposure to foreign cultures and first-hand experience of the workplace environment of host countries. They are given placements in multinational corporations or prestigious institutes in Melbourne, Brussels, Toronto, Paris, Dublin, London, New York, and other major cities. When Flames of the Forest bloom on campus in May and June, a new batch of graduates are about to enter a new stage of their lives. As the world becomes increasingly globalized, more and more CUHK graduates look beyond the boundaries of our city to mainland China and the world for employment opportunities. The Global Internship Programme is a response to this new trend. It broadens students' work and life experiences by offering them internships in large multinational companies and other organizations and enables them to enjoy different kinds of exposure in China and other countries. Host companies can also take this opportunity to look for potential employees. I would like to see the programme go from strength to strength and benefit a bigger pool of students in the future.
