A 360º Life: Whole Person Development Award Programme Students who are academically able but socially inept get called all sorts of names. Clearly the worth of a university student no longer depends on academic performance alone. Involvement in extra-curricular activities, physical prowess, integrity, even good taste are all yardsticks for measuring the competence of a university student. Recognizing this fact, United College introduced the Whole Person Development Award Programme in 2005 to encourage students to take an active part in both academic and non-formal educational activities. In the long run, the College hopes to encourage awareness and the pursuit of a richly balanced life in its graduates, and to groom well- rounded leaders for the community. These aims echo the College motto 'Make one's virtues shine and renew the people' and connect with its mission to provide 'integrative education, pastoral care, and moral and spiritual enhancement of the young'. In 2008, the programme was renamed as the United College Fung Sun Kwan Whole Person Development Award Programme to acknowledge the generous support of Mr. Fung. Participants are expected to join or organize activities categorized into five areas, namely, ethical, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic. Reception has been very good, as demonstrated by the rise in the number of participants from 123 in 2005–06 to 313 in 2007–08.
