28   Chinese University Bulletin Spring • Summer 2008 P rof. James C.Y. Watt is the Brooke Russell Astor Chairman of the Department of Asian Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He was educated at Oxford University and joined CUHK in 1971 as the founding curator of the Art Gallery (subsequently renamed Art Museum) of the Institute of Chinese Studies. During his time, he articulated the founding vision of the museum, defining its primary mission as rendering support to teaching and research projects at the University. Although he has been working in New York for the past twenty years or so, Prof. Watt has maintained close connections with CUHK. He has served as Honorary Adviser to the museum, making remarkable contributions to its development.
