50   Chinese University Bulletin Spring • Summer 2008 Two QEF Projects Receive Outstanding Awards T he Quality Education Fund selected 20 outstanding projects and awarded certificates of merit to another 101 out of 7,000 applications over the past 10 years. Among them, two outstanding awards and seven certificates of merit went to CUHK faculty. The two outstanding projects were 'Accelerated Schools for Quality Education' led by Prof. John C.K. Lee ( left , centre), Faculty of Education, and 'V-China—Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teaching and Learning Using Video Conferencing Activities' headed by Prof. Wong Po- choi ( below , centre) of the Department of Information Engineering. Honours and Recognition The Accelerated Schools project received over HK$60 million in 1998, and was aimed at enhancing school education by means of a university–school partnership model in three dimensions: school administration, curriculum and teaching, parents and community. It is estimated that the three-year project served 50 schools and benefited over 60,000 teachers, students and parents. With HK$2.5 million, the V-China project organized remote learning activities in schools in mainland China and Hong Kong through advanced video-conferencing technology, with a coverage of over 300 local, mainland and overseas schools. The project enables students to gain knowledge of China through remote cultural exchange with mainland schools and also improve their Putonghua.
