20   Chinese University Bulletin No. 1, 2009 Stamp of Approval from the QAC I n April 2008, The Chinese University of Hong Kong became the first institution to be audited by the Quality Assurance Council of the University Grants Committee (UGC). The report, compiled by independent experts, confirms that the University is upholding its mission of becoming a bilingual research-led comprehensive university of world-class standing. Some six to nine months before the audit visit, the University conducted an institutional self-review in accordance with the audit process as specified in the Audit Manual and culminating in the Institutional Submission to the QAC. Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice-Chancellor of the University, says that the University is both ‘proud’ to be the first institution audited and ‘heartened by the outcome’. Commendations and Affirmations The QAC commended CUHK in eleven areas, in particular, for its overall commitment to assuring the quality of its taught programmes its introduction of a rigorous system to ensure the quality of its academic programmes the variety and range of experiential learning opportunities provided to students, in particular exchange and internship programmes the level of academic support and pastoral care available its articulation of distinctive attributes its graduates should possess its approach to curriculum design its implementation of a bilingual policy the requirement that all students pass an IT Proficiency Test before graduation its recognition and reward of good teaching its measures for providing support to teachers and enhancing teaching performance its overall approach to assuring a quality experience for research students • • • • • • • • • • •
