Activities and Events   47 First Cancer Patient Acupuncture Centre Opens T he first of its kind in Hong Kong, the CUHK Cancer Patient Acupuncture Centre opened on 16 March 2009. The centre aims at promoting high quality clinical research and providing acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy to alleviate cancer-related or therapy-induced symptoms, targeting cancer patients at the Prince of Wales Hospital. The centre is located on the third floor of the Sir Y.K. Pao Centre for Cancer, Prince of Wales Hospital. It is collaborating with the College of Acupuncture- Moxibustion and Tuina, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, whereby qualified and experienced acupuncturists from Shanghai University will render high quality services to patients. Centre for Culture and Development Established W i t h t he v i s i on of p romot i ng synergy between culture and development through excellence and leadership in research, the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies (CRS) has established the Centre for Culture and Development. The centre was inaugurated on 18 April 2009 by guests of honour including Mrs. Carrie Lam (3rd right), Secretary for Development, HKSAR; Prof. Kenneth Young (3rd left), CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Richard Engelhardt (1st right), senior adviser to the UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture; Mr. John Howkins (2nd right), celebrated author; Prof. Lai Chi-tim (2nd left), chairman, CRS; and Prof. Desmond Hui (1st left), professor of CRS and director of the centre. Prof. Young affirmed the University’s support for the centre in using its research expertise to elucidate the synergies and tensions between culture and development. The centre has been commissioned by the Central Policy Unit of the HKSAR government to conduct a research project titled ‘Study on the Manpower Situation and Needs of the Arts and Cultural Sector in Hong Kong’, which will be completed later this year.
