8 Chinese University Bulletin Special Supplement 2010 P rior to the Nobel Prize, Professor Kao had been bestowed a galaxy of honours, including the Charles Stark Draper Prize, the Japan Prize, the equivalent of the Nobel in that country, a Marconi International Fellowship, and the Alexander Graham Bell Medal by IEEE. Some may say the Swedish prize had come a little too late for the 76-year-old Kao, who was unable to deliver the Nobel speech himself. But what do we know of lucidity, we who had doubts while he was seeking the world’s purest glass?
