The University is international in outlook and enjoys close association with many universities, foundations, and organizations abroad. The total enrolment of the University as at 31st December 1999 was 13,733, of whom 9,333 were undergraduate students and 4,400 postgraduate students. The University has 10 research institutes, under which are a number of research centres. They are the Institute of Chinese Studies, the Research Institute for the Humanities, the Asia-Pacific Institute of Business, the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research, the Hong Kong Cancer Institute, the Institute of Chinese Medicine, the Institute of Science and Technology, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, and the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology, which has been incorporated as a limited company. Extensions of the University include the School of Continuing Studies and the New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre.
