Teaching is carried out in the form of lectures, tutorials, practicals, and demonstrations, with integrated courses and small-group teaching through tutorials as its special features. Courses are arranged according to organ systems and aim at providing students with a working knowledge of physiology and its principles. The department also runs postgraduate programmes leading to MPhil and PhD degrees. Research activities are supported by state-of-the-art facilities and techniques such as confocal microscopy, molecular biology, microfluorimetry, and patch-clamping. The theory and practice of clinical psychiatry are taught to Year-4 students. Staff members also offer supervision in PhD and MPhil projects. Research activities focus on psychiatric disorders of major public health concern and the socio- cultural aspects of mental disorders. Clinical-biological and epidemiological investigations include dementia, affective disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse, and sleeping disorders. , & . The work is expected to be completed by the end of year 2000. The objectives of the School of Public Health are to contribute to the improvement of health through medical education, training, research and consultancy services in public health and in health-related sciences. The school will collaborate with the Government, the Hospital Authority, the Department of Health, the World Health Organization and other professional bodies and organizations. In the meantime, a Health Education and Health Promotion Unit has been established to provide training in health education and health promotion for school teachers in support of the Healthy Schools Programme.
