"" ! # $ # ( Applicable to students admitted in 1999–2000 and thereafter ) All students in their first year of attendance are required to complete an Intensive Programme in Putonghua, Cantonese and English offered by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature (Putonghua and Cantonese), and the English Language Teaching Unit (English). The programme consists of three 3-hour sessions for Cantonese, and two 3-hour sessions each for Putonghua and English. The purpose of the programme is to provide an opportunity for students to strengthen their ability to consult dictionaries for the correct pronunciation of individual characters or words. The programme will provide a key for students to open the door to more advanced language courses offered by various units of the University and will promote an awareness of the importance of language proficiengy.
