150 Part 5 • Department Profiles and Programmes of Studies Faculty of Medicine Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Tel.: 2632 2735 Fax.: 2637 2422 E-mail: ansoffice@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.aic.cuhk.edu.hk This Medical Year 5 module introduces students to anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine, with the objective of teaching resuscitation, perioperative medicine, and the management of pathophysiological derangements in acute illness. A pass in the module’s examination is mandatory for passing the final MB ChB examination (Part II, Third Professional Examination). In the new curriculum, teaching is spread out through all the medical years. The department is recognized internationally for its achievements in teaching, research, quality improvement, and intensive care practice. Renowned areas of research include pharmacokinetics of anaesthetic agents, pain medicine, critical incidents monitoring, and ICU outcome. There is an excellent structured specialist training programme, with trainees having won numerous prizes from the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists, and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. It also supervises MPhil and PhD students, organizes specialist training for the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and runs a training programme for pathologists from the mainland. Diagnostic services offered include surgical pathology, autopsy, cytology, haematology, blood transfusion, and molecular pathology. Research is focused on nasopharyngeal carcinoma, immunohistochemistry, neuropathology, renal pathology, liver cancers, and gastrointestinal lymphomas. Within the department, there are three research laboratories: the Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Research Laboratory which works closely with overseas cancer centres; the Brain Disease Laboratory; and the Eye Pathology Laboratory. Members of the department also serve professional and continuing medical educational bodies in pathology at the international level.
