It is a leading research unit in the world in two areas: • Coronary endothelium — smooth muscle interaction (EDHF-related) during heart surgery for preservation of thedonor heart/lung for transplantation; • Biological characteristics, physiology, and pharmacology of coronary artery bypass conduit grafts. The laboratory has been well funded and equipped. Over the years, more than 70 full papers fr om the laboratory have been published in r enowned international journals cited by ‘Medline’, including Circulation , TheJournal of Thoracicand CardiovascularSurgery , and Transplantation . The research findings have been regularly presented to international conferences on both clinical and basic cardiovascular science. The laboratory currently has four sections: organ chambers for large vessel studies; myograph for micro vessel studies; cellular electrophysiological setting for direct measurement of membrane potential of a single cell (myocyte); and nitric oxide meter and membrane-type electrodes for direct measurement. The laborato ry’s research team compr ises postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and postgraduate research students. Th e mission of AECT is to fo ster excellence in th e dev elo pment of knowledge and tools to facilitate commerce on the web, and more broadly, to support operationaldecisions and Internet business strategies in an information- intensive and technology-based economy. AECT conducts basic an d applied research in three broad areas of techno logy: Internet and information systems technologies,enterprise solution technologies, and emerging e-commerce-centred technologies. A majo r fo cu s o f AECT is to help local firms (includ in g th ose in manufacturing, banking, retail, and other service sectors) adopt e- commerce technologies and set up business operations on the Internet.
