I t provides quality continuing education programmesand services tomeet thechanging needs of society. In 2001–2, more than 2,000 courseswereoffered with atotal enrolment of over 36,000. Th e SCS o ffer s g ener al shor t co urses and awar d b earing programmes at the postgraduate,degree, associatedegree, diploma,and certificate levels. General short courses, which normally last three to four months each term, are usually self-enrichment programmes for adults with no specific admission requirements. They are offered three times a year in spring, summer,and autumn and cover variou s subjects su ch as art an d culture, bu siness admin istration, computer and information technology, disciplinary forces and policing/security studies, employment schema course series, health care, languages, performing arts, social sciences, women studies and distance learning courses. Diploma and certificate programmes have been offered since 1979. Th ese are designed in accor dance with guidelin es and standards set by the University. To optimize resou rce use and co st- eff ectiveness, the SCS collabo rates with academic dep artments at the Univ ersity as well as other institution s and prof essio nal organizations to organize or administer these professional programmes. Since 1988, the SCS has diversified its services to include the running of bachelor and postg raduate prog rammes in Hong Kong jointly with ov erseas universities. These programmes include a MasterDegree Programme in Applied Science in Biopharmaceuticals and a Master Degree Programme and Graduate Certificate Programme in Health Science Management with the Univ ersity of New So uth Wales (Australia); a Bachelor Degree Programme of Professional Studies in Policing /Civil Care and Security, a Bachelor Degree Programme of Mu sic/Teach ing , a Master Deg ree Prog ramme and a Gr adu ate Dip loma U niversity Extensions
