2 Introduction universities all over the world. The University is international in o utlook and enjoys closeassociation with many universities, foundations, and organizations abroad. Th e to tal enro lmen t of th e Un iver sity as at 31st December 20 01 was 15,071, of whom 9,430 were undergrad uate students and 5,641 postgraduate students. The University has 10 research institutes, un der which are a numb er of research centres. They are the Institute of Chinese Studies, the Research Institute for the Humanities, the Asia-Pacific Institute of Business, the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research, the Hong Kong Cancer Institute, the Institute of Chinese Medicine, the Institute of Science and Technology, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, and the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology, which has been incorporated as a limited company. Extensions of the University include the School of Continuing Studies and the New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre.
