At the undergraduate level there are major and minor programmes in linguistics and intercultural studies, European stud ies, French stu dies, an d German stu dies. Co ur ses listed un der these programmes may also betaken by non-major students as electives. The department also offers languag e courses in French, German, Spanish , and Italian, from beginners’ to advanced levels.Thecurriculum adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the study of language and culture, as well as the interface between them as discussed and resear ched upo n in vario us d isciplines. It aims to heighten multilingual and multicultural awareness among Hong Ko ng students and to cultivate an understanding of contemporary European and Asia-Pacific issues. It boasts a teaching team of international standard, and one of the largest libraries in Asia of audio-visual materials, scores, periodicals and boo ks on music. I t has its own chamber or chestra, a choir, an ear ly mu sic (Renaissance) ensemble,a Gamelan ensemble, and a Cantonese operatic singing group. Major research areas in the mu sic of China include Cantonese opera, Taoist ritual music, silk-and-bamboo music of Jiangnan, and court music of the Qing dynasty. With respect to Western music,sixteenth- and seventeenth-century liturgical mu sic, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century opera, twen tieth-century musical analysis an d per forman ce pr actice rep resent the principal f ields of research.
