154 Part 5• Department Profiles andProgrammes of Studies concentrating in finance will be able to understand the conceptual framework of modern finance, aswellas analyse and solvepracticalfinancial problems.Teachers in thedepartment have astrong track record of research in theoretical and empirical finance and econ omics, and their find ings have been published in rep utable professionalpublications. In co llabor ation with oth er dep artmen ts in the facu lties of business administration, engineering, and science, the department also introduced a BSc programme in quantitative finance in 1998–99, which offers courses in business, mathematics, statistics,and engineering. Graduates from the programmewill be able to work in general business or finance areas, and have a good knowledge of derivatives and financial investmentinstruments. The department isalso launching a new BBA Programme in Insurance, Financial and Actuarial Analysis to meet theneeds of the fast growing insuranceand actuarial community. This programme will take its first students in September 2002. In addition to the department’s two undergraduate progr ammes, and the concen tration areas it offer s in th e BA Faculty’s Integrated BBA undergraduate programme, the department also hosts an MSc Programme in Finance and runs an MPhil/PhD programme. Finance is also an intergral part of the curricula in the various MBA programmes the faculty offers. Thebasic objective of the BBA Programme in Hotel and Tourism Management is to train managers to make investment decisions and conduct businessoperations in hotel, tourism, and real estate industries. The curriculum emphasizes both theory and practice. In addition to the summer industry practicum, students are required to take core courses in business administration similar to those required of majors in the I nteg rated BBA Progr amme, as well as courses in hotel and tour ism management, hospitality real estate, and hospitality strategic management. The school has established a formal student exchange programme with the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University.
