They cover a broad range of topics in electronics and are largely experimental in approach. Students are taught how to turn theories and concepts into working systems, circuits, devices, and new electrical materials. Research interests of the departmentinclude biomedical eng in eering , comp uter v isio n, imag e an d sp eech p ro cessin g, wir eless commun icatio ns, o ptical commun icatio ns, integr ated cir cuit d esign , microelectro nic and op toelectro nic d evices an d materials. Th e department emphasizes high quality teaching and excellence in research, and all its degree programmes are accredited by the relevant professional bodies. It offers an information engineering undergraduate programmewith equalemphasis on networking and telecommunications systems. Specifically, IE students will learn the fundamentaltheory of information; networking architecture and protocol; th e techno logies that enable efficien t information stor age, exchang e, and transmission; and the processing of in formatio n in multimedia applications. Teachers are renowned researchers in the field, many with a strong industrial background. ItsBEng in Information Engineering Programme has been accred- ited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Besides, a new undergraduate programme in Internet Engineering is offered jointly with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, focussing on state-of-the-art technologies and applications for the Internet. Many graduates of the department continue to pursue postgraduate studies and many become leaders in industry.
