The teaching-learning environment is based on a 70-bed in-patient facility and out-patient facilities at the Prince of Wales Hospital and Sir Yue-kong Pao Centre forCancer, linked to a broad range of services including medical-haematological oncology, radiation oncology, and palliative medicine. International collaborative research and clinical trials are facilitated by a ded icated Comprehensive Cancer Trials Unit. The mission of this un it is to initiate and suppo rt differ ent phases of clinical cancer trials, supportive care and translational research through grants, donations and contracts with pharmaceuticalindustry; and to undertake research to reduce incidence, morbidity and mortality of cancer. Teaching in community medicine isfocused on th e concepts and research metho ds in ev idence-based medicin e, clinical epidemiology, epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases, occupational medicine, environmental h ealth, and health policy. Teaching in family medicine is centred on the concepts of family medicine, common health problems and theirmanagement. The department also runs postgraduate diploma pr ogrammes an d master pr ogrammes in pub lic health, epidemiolo gy and biostatistics, family medicine, health promotion and occupational health.Strategic resear ch areas include women’s health , osteop orosis and muscu losk eletal disorders, elderly health, schoolhealth, smoking,evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine, sero-epidemiology of hepatitis, air pollution, noise induced hearing loss, neurobehav ioural prob lems and or ganic solv ents, mental health, health services research and evaluation, and disease mapping. Itsundergraduate and postgraduate training is recognized by the collegesof radiologists of Hong Kong and the UK. Members of the department publish extensively in renowned journals and are frequently invited to lecture, teach, and demonstrate new imaging techniques at international meetings and conferences.
