Teach ing is carr ied ou t in the fo rm of lectur es, tuto rials, pr acticals, and demonstrations, with integrated courses and small-group teaching through tutorials as its features. Courses are arran ged according to or gan sy stems and aim at providing students with a working knowledge of physiology and its principles. The department also runs postgraduate programmes leading to MPhil and PhD deg rees. Resear ch activities are sup ported by state-o f-the-art facilities and techniques such as confocal microscopy, molecular biology, microfluorimetry, and patch-clamping. The theory and practice of clinical psychiatry are mainly tau ght in the f our th y ear. Staff memb ers also off er supervision in PhD and MPhil projects. Research activities focus on psychiatric disorders of major public health concern. Clinical epidemiological an d basic neuroscience investigations include dementia, schizophrenia, affective disorders, substance misuse, and sleep and eating disorders.
