In 2001 new programmes on materials science and engineering leading to the BSc, MPhil and PhD degrees were also introduced. There were some 220 undergraduatemajor students and over 80 postgraduate students in the department in 2001–2. Statistics is fundamental to all fields such as bio informatics, life sciences, p ublic h ealth, information engineerin g, fin ance, and the social scien ces, where q uantitative analysis is essential. The Risk Management Science Pr ogramme focu ses on finan ce and insu rance applications. The curricula of the p rogrammes ar e well balan ced between practice and theory. Students in the statistics programme can choose to specialize in either the Applied Statistics Stream or the Data Science and Business Statistics Stream. The department possesses advanced computing facilities and powerfulsoftware.Its teachers engage actively in research, and have wide-ranging research interests in applied and theor etic statistics. Many h ave also gained significant international recognition.
