Students r eceiv e systemic tr ainin g on ethnographicand other fieldwork methods, and can selectfroma variety of courses that focus on the cultural aspects of marriage and the family, gender, business, politics, langu age, religion, films, and fo od. Th e departmen t has also b een developing new courses in migration,interaction between indigenous and foreign cultures, and the emergence of an interlinked global culture. In 1997,an interdisciplinary Gender Studies Programme was inaugurated, being Hong Kong’s first and the only academic programme available in gender studies. Starting of f as a minor programme at the undergraduate level, it now offersmorethan 20 required and elective courses. An MAprogramme inwomen’s studies, an MPhil programme and a PhD programme in gender studies are also launched. The form of habitation,its intentions and instruments are the core of the study of architecture. It extends from the individual dwelling to villages and cities, and entails the built embodiment of human culturethroughout history. The department pr ovides und ergraduate and postgraduate prog rammes leading to professional careers in architecture and related fields. Research areas cover in formation tech nology, housin g in Hong Kong and on the mainland, sustainable design, design pedagogy, computational design, professionalpractice, environmental technology, building materials, construction, adaptation reuseand preservation, vernacular architecture, urban design, and architectural history. In April 2000, thedepartmentachieved full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) and the Arch itects Registr ation Bo ard (ARB) with the particip ation of the Commonwealth Association of Ar chitects (CAA) and the National Board of Architectural Association of China (NBAA).
