With over 20 full-time teachers, the department runs the largestundergraduate economics programme and also the largest MPhil programme in economics among local universities.Graduates of the department predominate in the territory’s research economist positions. The department’s new name and the newly revised curriculum instil a sense of professionalism into a conventional acad emic d iscipline with wide- ranging practical ap plications. Teaching and research concen trate on th ree areas: geographical tech niques, phy sical and environmental systems, and urban and regional systems. Emphasis is placed on the use of an integrative approach and geoinformation technology in the study and resolution of local and regional p roblems involving complex interactions among natural resources, environment, and human activities. Local and overseas field trips are regularly organized to enrich students’ learning. Over 40 courses are offered in the areas of political theory,comparative government, international relations, political economy, gender politics, public administration, public policy,constitutional law, administrative law, internationallaw, criminal law, jurisprudence,and legal systems.
