A student who satisfies the conditions for gr aduation shall be awarded a bachelor’s degree with one of the following classifications: First Class Honours, Second Class Honours Upper Division, Second Class Honours Lower Division, Third Class Honours, and Pass. Degree classification isbased on the grade point averages of major an d oth er cou rses, and the results of the comp rehensive examination or its equivalent. However, thedegrees of MBChB are awarded on the basisof professional examinations taken at the end of the second to the fifth medical years. Curriculum Structure The normal length of study for a full-time programme is three to four years with the exception ofmedical studies and some professional programmes which have prescribed otherwise. The curriculum (excluding the MBChB Programme, the Intercalated Degree Programme in Medical Sciences, and the Pre-registration Nursing Programme) is based on a credit unit system. For graduation, aSecondary 6 and a Secondary 7 entrant* shall successfully complete atleast 123 and 99 units of courses respectively which include: (a) General Education (15 units); (b) Physical Education (two units); (c) normally up to 72 required units of major courses; (d) remaining units in minor and/or elective courses of the student’s choice. If a graduatio n thesis/project is prescr ibed by their major programmes, students need to take and pass it. Starting from 1997–98, all students in th eir first year of attendance are requir ed to comp lete an In tensive Pr ogramme in Putonghua, Cantonese and English which is non-credit-bearing, but the examination results of which will be recorded on academic reports and transcripts. Starting from 1999–2000, all newly-admitted students are required to achieve a certain level of competence in IT. They areexpected to pass the IT proficiency test within their fir st year of attendance. If they pass, ‘IT Proficiency Passed’ willbe recorded on thetranscripts. If they fail, they are required to attend summer intensive courses in IT. * A Secondary6 (or 7)en trant means a student who has been admitted to theUniversity after completion of Second ary 6 (or 7)in a school or on equival ent qualifications.
