332 Part 5• Department Profiles andProgrammes of Studies In keeping with the University’s distinctive educational mission of promoting cu ltur al exchang e b etween East and West, an In ter national Asian Studies Programme was launched atthe University in 1977 with the support of the Yale- China Association. This programme is o pen to students, research scholars and academic staf f from overseas who wish to take advantage of the University’s academic resources and research facilities in the broad ar ea of Chinese, Asian and international studies, including the Chinese language training programme offered by the New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre. The International Asian Studies Programme (IASP) is fully integrated into theregular structure of the University. Participantsfrom overseas will share hostels with local studentsand take the same courses, exceptthose offered by theFaculties of Medicine and Education, the Intensive Programme in Putonghua, Cantonese and English, and pu tonghua courses offered to CUHK degr ee candidates. All overseas students will also be encouraged to join a special Chinese language training programme offered by the New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre. In addition, the IASP also offers selected courses in Asian, Chinese and internation al studies taugh t in Eng lish for the ben efit of both pro gramme particip ants an d local stud ents. Participan ts sho uld be aware that n ormal timetabling constraints, course quotaand language proficiency requirements apply equally to all students. There aretwo categories of participants:(1) associateundergraduate students taking a full load (12–18 units per term) of University courses; and (2) associate postg raduate students taking either (a) a full load (12 –18 units per term) of University courses or (b) conducting a research and taking a minimum course load of three units. Theprogramme isnormally for one academicyear (September to May),but participation for one term only is also possible. Previous coursework on Chinese lang uage o r Asian studies is n ot requ ired fo r admission, but und ergrad uate applicants must have normally completed at least two terms of university study and graduate applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree. The University also welcomes exchange students from partner universities. All exchange students at CUHK are automatically affiliated with the programme and are exempt from paying theprogramme fees.However, they are responsible I nternational Asian Studies Programme
