432 Part 7• University Ordinanceand Regulations 3.0 Unive rsity Requirements Besides the medical prog ramme, medical stu dents sh all complete the following before graduation, unless exempted therefrom: (a) 12 unitsof General Education courses as prescribed by the University and the college to which he is assigned; and (b) two units of Physical Education. Physical Education courses shall normally be completed in MedicalYear 1 (except for the transfer studentsadmitted according toReg. 2.3). 4.0 Length of Study 4.1 A student shall complete the Medicine Programme (Medical Years 1 to 5) within a period n ot exceedin g seven acad emic years unless determined otherwise by the Faculty Board of Medicine. 4.2 A stud ent shall no t repeat Med ical Year 1. A student who fails the First Professional Examination shall have to discontinue medical studies at this university unless determined otherwise by the Faculty Board of Medicine. 4.3 A student shall complete Medical Years 2 to 5 within a period not exceeding six academic years, and shall not repeat any of these four Medical Years more than once, u nless d etermined oth erwise by the Faculty Boar d of Medicine. 4.4 A stu dent who fails to complete the pr ogrammes and pass the relevant examin ations within the prescr ibed period s as stipulated above sh all be required to discontinue these studies at the University. 5.0 Asse ssment and Ex amina tion 5.1 Students will be assessed in accordan ce with the regulations and criteria set by the respective panel of examiners of the year. 5.2 Absence from examinations (a) A student who for medical or other compelling reasons is unableto sit for any course examination, shall apply in writing with documentary evidence at the earliest possible moment but not later than 10 working days after the examination concerned to the Dean o f Medicin e for permission for absence. In the case of illness/injury, a certificate signed or countersigned by the Director of the University Health Service shall accompany theapplication. (b) If his application for absence is permitted,a student may be otherwise assessed at the d iscretion of th e Pan el of Examiner s/Examination Committee concerned. Astudent who is not allowed another assessment or supplementary examination shall have to repeat the course, repeat the year or to discontinue studies as recommended by the panel of examiners/examination committee. (c) A stud ent who is absent fr om any examination without permission shall be given a grade of ‘F’ in that examination.
