The colleges, in turn,are responsible for student-orientated teaching and the provision of residential accommodation. All teaching staff and full-time undergraduate students are assigned to different constituent colleges. Undergraduate Studies At its in ception the Univ ersity ’s und ergraduate curriculum was b ased o n a combination of the credit unit system and the degree examination system. After a comprehensive review in the mid-80s,the University decided to adopt a pure credit-unit-based curriculum structure. From 1991–92 onwards, greater flexibility was introduced into students’ selection of courses and paceof study. Full-time Und ergraduate Stud ies The University endeavour s to prov ide a wide variety of majo r an d minor programmes to meet the changing needs of society. In 2000–2002, the University introduced six major programmes — modern languages and intercultural studies under the Faculty of Arts; mathematics education under the Faculty of Education; innovation and design engineering, and Internet engineering under the Faculty of Engin eerin g; an d risk man agement science, and applied chemistry with management studies under the Faculty of Science. Two minor programmes were also introduced under the Faculty of Engineering: information technology and electronic engineering. In 2002–3 a major programme in insurance, financial an d actu arial analy sis un der th e Facu lty of Bu sin ess Administratio n was introduced; and two minor programmes in risk management science and social research respectively un der the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Social Science were launched. Part-time Und ergraduate Stud ies The Part-time Degree Programmes were first launched in 1981–82 with classes conducted in the evening. The two part-time degree programmescurrently offered are music, and primary education. Postgraduate Studies Master’s pro grammes were fir st off ered in 19 66– 67, an d the n umb er of programmes has, in 2002–3 increased to 123. Doctoral programmes were first introduced in 1980–81, and the number of programmes hasincreased to 61 in 2002–3.
