TheConstituentColleges 79 Chung Chi College Chun g Chi Colleg e was f ounded in October 1 951 by the represen tatives of Protestant church es in Hong Kong to meet the need for a local institution of higher learning thatwould be both Chinese and Christian. In 1955,it wasformally incorporated under an ordinance of the government. Thecollegehad a very modestbeginningwith borrowed and rented premises, first in the Cathedral Hall and St. Paul’s Co-educational College, then in Caine Road and Lower Albert Road. Expansion was made possible by financial help from church organizations inNorth America and Britain. Localchurches, firms, an d private in divid uals also gave consid erable sup port. In 195 6 the college moved to its permanen t site in th e Ma Liu Shu i valley. Between 1 95 9 and 1963 th e college received the bulk of its fun ds f rom the g o v er nmen t. I n 1 96 3 th e co lleg e was incor po rated as on e of the thr ee colleges of The Chin ese Un iver sity o f Hon g Ko ng. Th e co llege set u p a Theolo gy Divisio n f or th e training of Christian ministers, an d later estab lished its own Chaplaincy Officeto promotereligious activitieswhich include Sunday worship services, and Christian fellowship programmes. Academic and cultural activities areregularly organized for both staff and students of the college. They include seminars, college life luncheon talks, annual education conferences, the Siu Lien Ling Wong Visiting Fellows Programme, and various exchange and visitor programmes. Students are also encouraged to take part in extracu rricular activities organized by the co llege student union, departmental societies, class societies, various interest groups, the non-residential hall student society, and student hostel associations. Various new endeavours, such as the studen t visitor prog ramme, language enhancement programme, learning artsprogramme,Quality Activity Award Scheme, outward bound training programme,mentor programme, service learning programme and summer study ab road pr ogramme, ar e desig ned to p rov ide stu dents with more learning opportunities in the pursuit of a balanced education.A widearray of scholarships,
