The Constituent Colleges 87 of student life in the college, are organized by the college student union and a host of student clubs and societies. In 2004–05, NewAsia College had a student population of 2,382, of whom 1,052 were male and 1,330 female. Approximately 50 per cent of the student population received scholarships, bursaries or other forms of financial assistance. In 2004–05, the college awarded 87 scholarships and bursaries amounting to about HK$3 million. United College The mission of the college is to strive to realize its motto of ‘enlightening virtues, renewing man’, and to serve the people of Hong Kong and of the world through integrative education, pastoral care, and moral and spiritual enhancement of the young. United College was founded in 1956 with the amalgamation of five post- secondary colleges: Canton Overseas College, Kwang Hsia College, Wah Kiu College, Wen Hua College, and Ping Jing College of Accountancy. The five colleges decided to pool their resources to provide quality tertiary education for local students. The United College of Hong Kong was i n c o r p o r a t e d u n d e r a n ordinance of the government in 1957 with a board of trustees as its governing body. In 1962, the membership of the board of trustees was broadened to include representation from the local community, and Dr. the Hon. Kenneth Ping-fan Fung was elected chairman of the board. In July 1962, the board appointed Mr. T.C. Cheng, then Chief Assistant Secretary for Chinese Affairs in the government, as president of the college. Dr. Cheng assumed office in January 1963. In October 1963, United College became one of the founding constituent colleges of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
