The Documentation Unit is open to staff, researchers and students. The institute’s Telephone Survey Research Laboratory collects longitudinal public opinion data of academic and social value, and presents regularly to the public the results of telephone polls on public issues. Supported by the Hong Kong Foundation for Research and Development in Diabetes, donations and a large number of research grants, the HKIDO encompasses five centres, all led by clinicians and basic scientists with extensive experience in the respective fields. The institute serves as a platform promoting local and international collaboration and strives to achieve academic excellence in the prevention of diabetes and its complications through innovation and development of human resources. Its five centres are: Diabetes and Endocinology Clinical Pharmachology Trial Centre, Diabetes Applied Genomics and Bioinformatics Centre, Diabetes Epidemiology and Outcome Research Centre, Diabetes Drug Discovery and Cell Replacement Centre, and Diabetes Education and Professional Development Centre. It helps the University perform its role as a leading centre of educational research, a responsible institution that addresses the needs of the teaching profession, and an active consulting agent for international organizations and local educational bodies, public and private. It also helps strengthen the University’s ties with local schools and overseas institutions. Projects initiated by the institute aim to facilitate educational planning, and inform policy-makers and members of the educational profession on crucial issues.
