108 Part 3 • Research Units and University Extensions Institute of Digestive Disease Tel.: 2632 2233 Fax.: 2635 0075 E-mail: idd@cuhk.edu.hk The mission of the Institute of Digestive Disease is to: • conduct research that changes clinical practice, both locally and globally; • provide training to gastroenterologists and GI surgeon with a comprehensive and integrated approach to digestive diseases; • provide top quality service as a tertiary referral centre for digestive diseases. Gastroenterology is a specialty that straddles the traditional boundary between internal medicine and general surgery. The mutual distrust and lack of cooperation between physicians and surgeons is legendary. Such animosity is one of the major factors that thwarted development in the specialty. A major factor that allows the institute’s researchers to establish an international reputation in a relatively short time is esprit de corp . Since the inception of the new medical school and the teaching hospital of the Chinese University in the early 1980s, very close cooperation between the medical and surgical gastroenterology teams was established. In this way, resources and experience can be shared and there are excellent opportunities for cross-fertilization of ideas and innovations. Over the last two decades, the success of this model has been phenomenal. In collaboration with surgeons, scientists, cancer biologists, and outcome researchers, the institute’s researchers are committed to consolidate their existence by formally establishing the Institute of Digestive Disease.
