Research Institutes and Centres 111 The centre, supported by the University and the C.N. Yang Foundation, has a mission to promote research and teaching excellence in all areas of optical sciences. Due to the wide range of technological applications of optical sciences, much of the research is interdisciplinary, involving participation and collaboration of researchers from different speciality areas, namely, physics, chemistry, biology, electronic and information engineering. Student training with a focus on optical sciences is provided in the form of postgraduate studentships. The centre has laser light sources that operate from the VUV to mid-IR, with corresponding radiometric and spectroscopic detection systems. Additional hardware includes materials characterization instrumentation such as SEM and TEM for a comprehensive investigation of novel optical materials. It is also an important vehicle for inter-institutional cooperation in scientific research and technological development, and consultation for industries, government departments, and other organizations. Under the institute are three major research centres and a joint laboratory. It provides skilled personnel, high-power computer hardware and sophisticated software packages, to Hong Kong’s research scientists and techno- entrepreneurs, with the aim of advancing biotechnological research as an academic pursuit or commercial venture. Its homepage is hyperlinked with universities, industries and communities worldwide. The centre also offers technical expertise in bioinformatics as well as molecular biology-oriented database development.
