Faculty and Departmental Research/Consultancy Units 123 Funded by the Education and Manpower Bureau of the HKSAR, the centre has been offering in-service teacher training courses, workshops, and teaching and learning materials to secondary school teachers involved in teaching Chinese history, history, history and culture, and integrated humanities. Centre for Developmental Psychology Tel.: 2609 6576 Fax.: 2603 5019 E-mail: cdp@psy.cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.psy.cuhk.edu.hk The Centre for Developmental Psychology was established by the Department of Psychology in 2001 to facilitate basic and applied research on both the social and cognitive development of infants, children, and adolescents. The centre houses a state-of-the-art infant laboratory as well as a separate corner for testing and observing children and adolescents. Activities of the centre include: • conducting basic behavioural, cognitive, and neuropsychological research on infants, children, and adolescents; • applying the findings of developmental research to educational problems and family systems; • assessing a wide range of cognitive, social, and behavioural skills in infancy, childhood, and adolescence; and • forming partnerships with institutions in Hong Kong, mainland China, and overseas to promote cross-cultural and cross-institutional developmental research. Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEID) Tel.: 2252 8812 Fax.: 2635 4977 E-mail: CEID@med.cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://ceid.med.cuhk.edu.hk The CEID was established in October 2003 to provide professional training and conduct research in emerging infectious diseases. To enhance its research capability, a pre-fabricated P3 laboratory has been set up in 2005. The centre will also set up a Research Suite to provide information on infectious diseases. CEID is guided by director and various committees in formulating directions and strategies. It has recruited a professor in virology, a professor in infectious diseases, and three associate/assistant professors in 2005. On the research front, it has recruited 19 research staff including postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and research nurses to carry out different projects. The CEID has signed memoranda of understanding with five overseas universities and organizations. There are 14 key research projects being undertaken by CEID. They include SARS-CoV molecular epidemiology, immunogenetics, diagnosis, screening, treatment and complication, retrospective study of SARS outbreak in hospitals, and stigma associated with infectious diseases. Other projects on topics including HIV/AIDS are being planned.
