In 2002, a Pearl River Region Liaison Office of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education was set up by the centre to cultivate a regional network of health education and academic exchange. The centre has made a successful bid for the 20th World Conference on Health Promotion and Health Education in 2010, and is actively involved in a global programme for health promotion effectiveness and school health effectiveness. Its research focuses on urban housing in China, aiming to achieve high quality, affordable urban housing for high-density development, and to improve the livability and efficiency of future urban housing in China through the integration of design and technology. The centre has organized the China Urban Housing Conference to develop a common and value-added platform for experts and scholars from the mainland and overseas to exchange research expertise and to advise the government in areas including urban planning, housing development, architectural design, energy conversation, human settlement, eco-house, science technology research, and sustainable development. The centre has enjoyed the strong support of the Committee of Science Technology, Ministry of Construction of China for its previous events, as well as positive feedback from the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Fifth China Urban Housing Innovations will be held in November 2005 at the Chinese University. Established in 1999, its mission is to help turn Hong Kong into an Asia Pacific innovation and technology hub in the Asia Pacific.
