Support Facilities, Services, and Staff Organizations 163 The Press has close contacts with university presses and academic institutions and societies in Hong Kong and overseas. It has often co-published books with other US, European, and mainland Chinese university presses, overseas publishers, and academic institutions. In recent years, it has successfully established a distribution network in North America (where Columbia University Press is the sole distributor), Europe, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and mainland China. The Press has been publishing reference books for students, dictionaries/ glossaries and multimedia products. The co-publication and sales/marketing of the electronic version of the Siku quanshu , the most complete online database on the Chinese classics, has won the applause of scholars and research librarians all over the world. The Chinese University Press is a founding member of the Hong Kong Publishing Federation Ltd., and a member of the Association for Asian Studies, the International Association of Scholarly Publishers, and the Society for Scholarly Publishing. It is also an international member of the Association of American University Presses. Information Technology Services Centre The Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) (http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ itsc) offers a variety of services to support teaching, research, and administration at the University. Basic Computing Resources All University staff and students are given appropriate computer accounts which allow them to: • use the Campus-Wide E-mail System; • use the PCs, printing and scanning services provided in the User Areas (open 24 hours), as well as in the computer laboratories of the college, faculties and student hostels; • use the newsgroup service to exchange ideas with other University members; • publish their personal homepage on the University Personal Homepage server; • access the University Administrative Information Systems for completing course registration, checking their grades, or viewing their employment related data, etc.; • access the campus network services from their own computers on campus (through network ports available at classrooms, libraries, student hostels and public areas) or off campus (via a VPN connection on broadband or 56Kmodem access). Web-based Learning and Teaching To facilitate the teaching needs and enhance students’ active learning, the University has a web-based teaching platform that allows teachers to post information for specific courses and students to hand in their assignments online.
