It also conducts research and provides clinical services at the hospitals of the N.T. East Cluster Hospital Authority. With a research focus on molecular biology and infection control, the department aims at expanding and improving laboratory services related to those areas. Its other operating principles are providing education of a high standard and optimal patient care through the continuous upgrade of clinical, laboratory, consultation, and infection control services. Students gain experience in a range of clinical settings in hospital and community under the supervision of academic staff from the school. The school also offers a full range of postgraduate programmes at both the master’s and doctoral levels to enable students to acquire qualifications for career progression. Postgraduate students benefit from the research expertise of academic staff in current projects such as cardiovascular disease prevention and management, cancer prevention and management, gerontology/long-term care, and mental health. Over the years, it has progressed into a regional research and educational centre. Its objectives are two-fold: to provide high calibre training to medical students, doctors, nurses, and postgraduate students; and to advance obstetric and gynaecological knowledge through quality research. The department believes that the objectives are achieved by cultivating problem-solving techniques, critical thinking, and communication skills. Through these the department takes on a leading role in healthcare provision by furnishing state-of-the-art services in assisted reproductive technology, minimally invasive surgery, female pelvic medicine, gynaecological oncology, feto-maternal medicine, female biopsychology, and info-technology.
