The department also offers postgraduate programmes leading to MPhil and PhD degrees. Besides providing quality teaching, the department promotes active research, which is supported by state-of-the-art facilities and techniques in confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, microfluorimetry, patch- clamping, stem cell gene therapy, and molecular biology. The theory and practice of clinical psychiatry are mainly taught in the fourth year. Staff members also offer supervision in PhD and MPhil projects. Research activities focus on psychiatric disorders of major public health concern. Clinical epidemiological and basic neuroscience investigations include dementia, schizophrenia, mood disorders, substance misuse, and sleep and eating disorders. The school’s research covers epidemiological studies of common chronic diseases and disability, evidence based healthcare, health of children, women, and the elderly, nutrition, physical activity, health promotion and health education, addiction research and education, and health services delivery. These different areas are grouped into 12 different centres and there are 27 taught courses. As such, the School of Public Health represents a synthesis and consolidation of current areas of expertise and interests in non- communicable and communicable disease. The school collaborates with the government, the Hospital Authority, the Department of Health, the World Health Organization, and other professional bodies and organizations.
