Department Profiles • Science 197 respectively, and a taught programme leading to the MSc degree was launched in 1994. In 2001 new programmes on materials science and engineering leading to the BSc, MPhil and PhD degrees were also introduced. There were some 220 undergraduate major students and over 80 postgraduate students in the department in 2004–05. Statistics is fundamental to all fields such as bioinformatics, life sciences, public health, information engineering, finance, and the social sciences, where quantitative analysis is essential. The Risk Management Science Programme focuses on business, finance and insurance applications. The curricula of the programmes are well balanced between practice and theory. Students in the statistics programme can choose to specialize in either the Applied Statistics Stream or the Data Science and Business Statistics Stream. The department possesses advanced computing facilities and software. Its faculty engage actively in research, and have wide-ranging research interests in applied and theoretic statistics. Many have also gained significant international recognition.
