528 Part 7 • University Ordinance and Regulations Counted towards the total number of units gained by a student but not counted in the calculation of the GPA School for withdrawal from the examination or any part thereof. The Graduate School will determine in consultation with the graduate division concerned what follow-up action is required. Application for such withdrawal for medical reasons shall be accompanied by a medical certificate signed or countersigned by the Director of the University Health Service. A student who is absent from an examination for non-medical reasons without prior application for withdrawal shall be considered as failing in that examination. 13.0 Grades 13.1 A student’s performance shall be assessed on the basis of any or all of the following: class work, written work, laboratory performance, field work, research papers, assignments, tests and examinations and any other method of academic assessment. 13.2 Course grades, their standards and converted points used in reporting shall be as follows: Grade and Standard Sub-divisions (if needed) Converted Points A Excellent A 4.0 A– Very Good A– 3.7 B Good B+ 3.3 B 3.0 B– 2.7 C Pass C+ 2.3 C 2.0 C– 1.7 D Failure D 1.0 F Bad Failure F 0.0 P Ungraded Pass U Failure (unsatisfactory performance) 13.3 A student who has gained C– or above or P in a course shall earn the unit/s of that course. The units of courses repeated/retaken shall count only once in the total units gained by the student. 14.0 Unsatisfactory Performance 14.1 Unless the Graduate Council decides otherwise, a student shall be required to discontinue studies in the Graduate School if: (a) the cumulative average of the courses taken is 1.0 or below, or (b) there are failure grades in two courses or more, or
