The University 81 Liaison with the World of Learning The University has, since its inception in 1963, striven to enhance the cross- fertilization of Chinese and Western academic and cultural traditions. To this end, the University has established and maintained over the years relationships with a large number of institutions the world over, including universities, research institutes, centres of learning, governmental agencies, and in particular, regional and international associations of universities. The University is a member of a number of international education bodies which provide a platform for exploration and development of educational and academic partnerships. They include the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning, the Conference of Asian University Presidents, Eurasia-Pacific Uninet, the Institute of International Education, the International Association of Universities, the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific, and the Association of University Presidents of China (AUPC). The University has also been serving as one of the secretariat offices to AUPC since its founding in 1997. The Committee on Academic Links devises the academic linkage policy of the University which is implemented and coordinated by the Office of Academic Links (OAL). OAL is responsible for the management and development of academic linkages in support of the University’s academic priorities. Its work can be categorized into three areas: international links, China links, and exchange programmes for faculty members and students. Student Exchanges The University’s first exchange programme was launched in 1965 with the University of California system. Since then student exchange programmes have been established with over 150 institutions in other parts of the world. Apart from the UC system, exchange partners include Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania in the USA, Waseda University and Kyushu University in Japan, Korea University and Seoul National University in Korea, and the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto in Canada. There are also exchange agreements with institutions in mainland and Taiwan, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. The University is also a member of the International Student Exchange Programme and the University Mobility Asia and the Pacific, and runs a popular International Asian Studies Programme (IASP) that has already attracted over 3,000 students from many countries to study at CUHK. International Links In pursuant to the University’s vision to be acknowledged locally, nationally and internationally as a first-class comprehensive research university, the OAL actively pursues alliances and exchanges with international universities, institutions, foundations and government organizations.
