Department Profiles • Medicine 111 Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Organ Imaging Tel.: 2632 1035 Fax.: 2648 7269 E-mail: radiology@med.cuhk.edu.hk The department is known for its achievements in ultrasound, interventional radiology, head and neck, cardiac, musculoskeletal and breast imaging. Its undergraduate and postgraduate training is recognized by the colleges of radiologists of Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. Members of the department publish extensively in renowned medical journals and are frequently invited to lecture, teach, and demonstrate new imaging techniques at international meetings and conferences. In order to facilitate exchange of expertise in various aspects of imaging, the department has a continuous exchange programme with the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in Guangzhou, the General Hospital of the Chinese PLA in Beijing, and the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College. During the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in Hong Kong, the department contributed to the diagnosis, management and follow-up of the infected patients and set up a webpage dedicated to SARS, which attracted over 250,000 visits in the first six weeks and was listed as an information resource by the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. A similar webpage was set up to help disseminate information to the medical and general community on the Avian flu. Since July 2005, the department has become a regional examination centre for American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, adminsitrering regular licensing examinations for sonologists and sonographers. The aim is to produce doctors well educated in both the art and science of medicine, who will be able to care for patients in a holistic manner. This is fostered further for those graduates returning to the department for internship training. The department is also heavily involved in postgraduate training that is geared towards higher professional degrees (doctorate and master’s) as well as professional training in all major medical specialities: cardiology, clinical pharmacology, dematology, endocrinology and diabetes, gastroenterology and hepatology, geriatrics, haematology, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, rheumatology, and respiratory medicine. Members of the department are actively involved in academic activities at the international level. These include editorships and involvement in editorial boards of international journals, chairmanships and memberships of international professional organizations, and participation in non-governmental organizations such as the World Health Organization.
