Department Profiles • Medicine 113 Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Tel.: 2762 3124 Fax.: 2715 9490 E-mail: med_dovs@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.ovs.cuhk.edu.hk With the introduction of the new medical curriculum, the department provides clinical training in general ophthalmology to medical students starting from Year 1 all the way to Year 5. The main objectives are to provide early clinical exposure, and to enhance correlation of principles of basic science with clinical scenarios. This programme complements others in the Clinical Method Panel and the Neuroscience Panel. The training includes clinical tutorials and demonstrations, practical ocular examination, and use of ophthalmic equipment, all of which are conducted at the Prince of Wales Hospital and the Hong Kong Eye Hospital. The undergraduate programme consists of teaching of the musculoskeletal system, basic and clinical orthopaedics that extends from Year 1 to Year 5. Staff members of the department have had high professional and academic attainments in all major sub-specialities of orthopaedics: hand and microsurgery, sports medicine, traumatology, paediatric orthopaedics, tumour and orthopaedic oncology, spinal injury, orthopaedic rehabilitation, foot and ankle, and joint reconstruction surgery. Department of Paediatrics Tel.: 2632 2850 Fax.: 2636 0020 E-mail: paediatrics@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.pae.cuhk.edu.hk The department provides a 10-week module of theoretical and bedside teaching to Year 4 medical students, which aims at introducing the basic facts and principles about health and illness in children. Topics covered include care for the newborn; the influence of the perinatal period on subsequent health, growth and development; preventive medicine; the pattern, clinical presentation, and management of common childhood diseases. Staff of the department are actively engaged in clinical and epidemiological research in those same areas, which is complemented by basic animal and molecular research.
