It is the fulfilment of the human imperative for shelter and celebration of life by creating places of gathering, work, and solitude. The programme in architecture is designed to provide education in general and preparation for professional work as an architect in particular. Students are encouraged to enrich their educational experience by exploring lateral relationships with other subjects and disciplines as well as through independent study and experience of other cultures. The core of studies consists of design in four studios in additional to courses in four subject areas. The studios are defined in terms of four primary themes: habitation, urbanization, tectonics, and technics. The courses in four subject areas concern design, humanities, technology, and professional practice. The professional architectural degree programme consists of two consecutive programmes: one which spans three years leading to the degree of Bachelor of Social Science (Architectural Studies), followed by two years of graduate work leading to the degree of Master of Architecture. The work of the department is supported by a host of specialized resources including the Architecture Library, a design technology lab, a computer lab, a model workshop, an exhibition gallery, studios, and research units. It was also one of the top-ranking economics department in Asia in terms of publications. The department offers undergraduate courses in theory, applications, and analytical skills, with special reference to Hong Kong, mainland China, and East Asia. With over 20 full-time teachers, the department runs the largest undergraduate economics programme and also the largest MPhil programme in economics among local universities. Graduates of the department figure prominently in the territory’s research economist positions.
