314 Part 3 • Department Profiles and Programmes of Studies School of Law Division of Law PhD and MPhil Programmes in Laws The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Laws and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Laws are degrees by research. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of legal research, to the skills of legal writing, to the identification of a researchable topic and to the framing and organization of a large-scale dissertation. The supervisor will both support and monitor the student’s development and ensure that appropriate advice and guidance is provided specifically for the thesis component and more generally for the student’s intellectual development. LLM Programmes (I) LLM Programme in Chinese Business Law The Master of Laws (LLM) in Chinese Business Law aims at equipping students with a broad intellectual outlook on the legal aspects of doing business with China. The essential objectives of the programme are to provide students with a structured course to study the norms, processes and institutions in China in civil and commercial areas in the context of an evolving political, economic and social environment. (II) LLM Programme in Common Law The Master of Laws (LLM) in Common Law offers local and overseas students the opportunity to gain an understanding of the common law system. Students may undertake this course either to gain an understanding of the history and development of the common law, its institutions and its personnel, or for those who already have a background in the common law, to further develop their competence in the common law through selection of specialized and intensive courses of study of common law subjects. A central theme of the programme concerns the principles, theories, and values of the common law as well as its methods and practices. (III) LLM Programme in International Economic Law The Master of Laws (LLM) in International Economic Law is designed to offer students an intensive course of study of the law and practice of cross-border business transactions. Students will be trained for practice in key areas such as international sales and finance, M&A (mergers and acquisitions), technology transfer and shipping law. Extensive skills training modules will ensure that upon completion of the programme students will be able to conduct both practical work and independent research in the relevant subject areas. JD Programme The Juris Doctor (JD) programme is a versatile graduate degree leading potentially to admission as barrister or solicitor in Hong Kong. The JD Programme will provide students with a wide and exciting range of elective courses in the common law, Chinese law, comparative law, and international law. The JD Programme is formally classified as a taught master’s degree and it is not customary for JD graduates to use the title ‘Doctor’.
