Research Institutes and Centres 337 Centre publications include the journal, Renditions (website: http://www. renditions.org) , published semiannually since 1973, and the Renditions Books and Renditions Paperbacks series. The Translation Studies Research Series, published in Beijing or Hong Kong, was launched in 1999 and the Renditions CD-ROM series and Renditions PDA series began in 2002. The centre has strong links with major centres of translation studies on the mainland, in Europe and in the US. Since the mid-1990s it has spearheaded research into Chinese translation traditions and promoted the study of different Asian translation traditions. The 1st Young Researchers’ Conference on Chinese Translation Studies in 2004 represents the centre’s initiative in this aspect. In addition, the Renditions Fellowship allows translators of world renown to carry out a translation project in Hong Kong; the Renditions Research Fellowship attracts distinguished international researchers of translation history, theory and criticism; and the annual Stephen C. Soong Translation Studies Memorial Awards honour Chinese academics who have made significant contribution to Chinese translation studies. T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre Tel.: 2609 7392 Fax.: 2603 7989 E-mail: clrc@cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ics/clrc The centre has its origin in the Chinese Linguistics Research Centre which was first established in 1966. In early 1979, it was expanded into the Chinese Language Research Centre, and in 1980 it was renamed T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre. One of the centre’s main goals is to promote comprehensive research on the Chinese language including Chinese paleography, phonology, grammar, and vocabulary, and to make available to the public and teachers of Chinese the results of its research, in the hope of raising the standard of Chinese language teaching in Hong Kong. The centre lays great emphasis on linguistic studies. In recent years the quarterly Newsletter of Chinese Language and the biannual Chinese Language Studies have generated a great deal of interest amongst scholars in the relevant fields of linguistic studies. Many large-dialectual surveys have been conducted over the years to thoroughly study dialects which had not been well documented previously. The centre is also keen on academic cooperation with scholars outside the Chinese University. Since the inception of the new medical school and the teaching hospital of The Chinese University in the early 1980s, very close cooperation between the medical and surgical gastroenterology teams was established.
