358 Part 4 • Research Units and University Extensions CEID, as an integral part of the School of Public Health, incorporates a vast array of inter-disciplinary expertise involving clinicians, microbiologists, public health, and faculties within the university. The centre has the mandate to conduct research, provide training and education, and support the preparedness of future emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in our geographic region. CEID carries out the following three major programmes: • Research CEID is active in research on epidemiology, basic sciences and clinical management aspects of on emerging infections. Arange of scientific and epidemiological research on SARS has been organized. Strategic research areas including HIV/AIDS; viral hepatitis; enteric infections; influenza and tuberculosis are being developed, with the collaboration of laboratory microbiologists and infectious disease clinicians. There is also close partnership with the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health, as well as other international health agencies. We also aim to strengthen our connections with China CDC and other academic institutes in the mainland. • Training and Education Two award-bearing courses would continue to be run by CEID, they are: (a) Master of Science inApplied Epidemiology and (b) Postgraduate Diploma in Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases. Short certificate courses are conducted, both as standalone training, as well as part of the Master/Diploma programme. We also organize seminars; international conference; provide consultancy services in the field emerging infectious diseases. • Preparedness of Infectious Diseases To enhance the preparedness for infection, CEID launches pilot study to promote infectious disease preparedness in the hospital and university environment, two areas of focus would be prioritized on the application of syndromic surveillance; and the characterization of infection control in the community. Research infrastructure is crucial in supporting the work of CEID. A new P3 laboratory was set up in 2005 and named as Lo Kwee Seong Research Laboratory in appreciation of the generous donation from the K.S. Lo Foundation. Other laboratory facilities of CEID include: (1) Molecular Biology Laboratory located in the areas of the CU campus; (2) a laboratory at the Department of Microbiology of the PWH; (3) South China National Research Centre Integrated Biosciences Laboratory in the building of HKIB.
