Faculty and Departmental Research/Consultancy Units 381 Research projects underway include the evaluation of the medicinal and nutritional value of mushrooms; development of mushroom-based health food items; quality control in the canning of mushrooms; cloning of DNA associated with shrimp- derived allergens; application of molecular biology to mushroom breeding; evaluation of mushrooms as a source of commercial flavourants; development of microbial products for use in the food industries; upgrading of food industry wastes into added- value products; genetically engineering plants for improved food quality; and the use of plants as bioreactors to produce specialty products. The centre aims to provide research opportunities, teaching materials and assistance to scholars in China who choose to teach or pursue postgraduate studies in Christianity. Teachers and postgraduate students from the mainland are invited to visit the centre and stay at CUHK for a period of four weeks, mainly during the summer. The centre offers intensive courses in Christian studies including ‘Introduction to the Old Testament’, ‘Introduction to the New Testament’, ‘Basic Christian Doctrines’, and ‘Christian Personal and Social Ethics’. The centre also arranges for participants to visit Christian organizations and churches in Hong Kong. During their stay at the centre, individual tutorship will be provided if necessary, in accordance with their research subjects. Programme expenses are supported by designated funds from individual donors and Christian organizations. S.H. It will implement a new, multidisciplinary and sustainable programme in research and services in cardiovascular disease and stroke, which will form the basis of incorporating upfront clinical service with cutting edge technology in vascular medicine. Patients are benefited with cardiovascular diseases and stroke in Hong Kong by incorporating new and cutting edge technology in the diagnosis, treatment and monitor programme. These new technologies usually start as research programme and clinical trials, will eventually be integrated into new clinical therapy where university teaching hospitals are the primary sites for introducing these programmes with experienced expertise.
