Joint Research Units 389 Joint Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering (JCBME) Tel.: 2609 8285/8459 Fax.: 2603 5558 E-mail: jcbme@ee.cuhk.edu.hk Website: http://www.ee.cuhk.edu.hk/~jcbme JCBME is an inter-institutional research and development centre jointly established by Zhejiang University and the Chinese University in August 1999. It is an open research and academic exchange environment that promotes collaboration among researchers in engineering, medicine, and science to provide interdisciplinary insight into medical and life science problems. The research activities of JCBME are focused on the following areas: • electronic information technology for biomedicine and health care: tele-medicine, mobile helath, e-medicine, and mobile medicine; • bioelectronics: medical devices and biosensors, body sensor networks, wearable medical devices; • engineering in Chinese medicine; • biomedical measurements, processing, modelling, and simulation; • medical visualization, virtual reality, medical imaging and image processing; and • neural engineering. Office was concurrently setup in Nanjing University Gulou Hospital and the Prince of Wales Hospital of the Chinese University. The aims of the joint centre is to strengthen cooperation in scientific research, teaching and training in spine and clinical realm between mainland China and Hong Kong, to fully utilize and complement the advantages of both sides so as to enhance and consolidate the academic and clinical international standing. To build up international scientific scoliosis research cooperation network and extend the Centre’s influence on the Asia- Pacific region as well as globally, the centre focuses on (1) teaching and training of clinician and postgraduates, (2) conducting exchange of distinctive professors, (3) organizing worldwide professional academic conferences, (4) carrying out clinical and basic research, (5) seeking opportunities of cooperation with the medical industry, conduct product improvement, development and promotion so as to achieve the application and technology transfer of high standard research results, (6) jointly establishing a research fund to sustain the research toward finding the etiopathogenesis of the scoliosis.
