From January 2006, the School has been renamed as the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Bearing the mission of providing quality continuing education programmes and services to meet the changing needs of society, the school offers a diverse range of programmes at different levels. In 2005–06, around 2,000 courses were offered with a total enrolment of over 40,000. Programmes offered by SCS can be broadly categorized into general courses and award-bearing programmes. General courses, normally lasting two to four months each, have no specific admission requirements, and are self-enrichment in nature. Since 1979, SCS has been offering award-bearing programmes at higher diploma, advanced diploma, professional diploma, diploma, and certificate levels. These programmes have specific entrance requirements and are designed in accordance with the guidelines and standards set by the University to provide academic and professional qualifications for those who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge in their particular fields of study. SCS courses and programmes cover a wide range of disciplines including art, music and the humanities; business and management; science and information technology; traditional Chinese medicine and health care; languages and translation; and social sciences, and security studies. Starting from 1988, SCS has diversified its portfolio in collaboration with professional organizations, as well as academic institutions in mainland China and overseas to offer award-bearing programmes, including: • PhD in Applied Linguistics (with Lancaster University, UK) • Master of Arts Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (with Lancaster University, UK) • Master of Arts Degree in (Managerial) Economics (with University of Oklahoma, USA) U niversity Extensions
