Support Facilities, Services, and Staff Organizations 407 • to obtain and maintain just conditions of employment; • to protect the interest of its members; • to strengthen relations with the University authorities on the basis of mutual respect and understanding; • to promote the cultural, social, educational, and recreational well-being of its members. CUSA aims to keep its members informed of the welfare and benefits offered in institutions funded by the University Grants Committee, and negotiate or consult on behalf of its members with the University authorities on all matters of common interest. The executive body which governs the association is its executive committee, whose members are elected biennially by secret ballot during alternate annual general meetings. Standing sub-committees and ad hoc working groups are appointed to advise the executive committee on matters relating to members’ general benefits. Each year social activities are organized to provide opportunities for members working in different departments and units in the University to acquaint themselves with one another. In June 1999 CUSA joined the Federation of Hong Kong Higher Education Staff Associations as a full member, with two representatives participating as the federation’s council members. The new homepage of the CUSA, launched on 8th March 2006, contains useful information about the association such as newsletters, service details, AGM minutes, membership privileges and the latest accomplishments. The website also features a bulletin board function and welcomes the input and on-line discussion of CUSA members. The Chinese University of Hong Kong Employee’s General Union The Chinese University of Hong Kong Employee’s General Union (CUGEU) was established and registered under the Trade Union Ordinance in April 2004. All full- time staff employed by CUHK are eligible to join the Union. Since its establishment, CUEGU has paid a special attention to contract workers. CUEGU aims at: • promoting and defending the rights of staff employed by CUHK; • ensuring just terms of employment and job stability; • contributing to the building of a vibrant campus community that include staff, students and other stakeholders; • monitoring university governance, ensuring that as a public funded university, CUHK is accountable to both its students, staff, alumni, as well as the government and the public. The major activities of CUEGU include: • handling staff grievances; • collecting and reflecting members’ views related to the terms of employment, personnel management, as well as the university’s governance issues; • networking with other university trade unions for sharing of information and views, as well as for building solidarity in the sector;
