Founded in 1963 under the joint auspices of New Asia College and the Yale–China Association, the Centre became a part of the University in 1974. Every year close to 1,000 international students from different parts of the world are admitted to the Centre, ranging from absolute beginners to trained sinologists who wish to polish their spoken Chinese or learn a new Chinese dialect. Among the local and non-local CUHK students, over 3,000 of them take language courses offered by CLC. Currently, CLC is authorized by the University to offer the following 14 certificates and diplomas programmes to the public: Certificate Programme in Putonghua as a Foreign/Second Language Diploma Programme in Putonghua as a Foreign/Second Language Advanced Diploma Programme in Putonghua as a Foreign/Second Language Certificate Programme in Cantonese as a Foreign/Second Language Diploma Programme in Cantonese as a Foreign/Second Language Advanced Diploma Programme in Cantonese as a Foreign/Second Language Foundation Certificate Programme in Written Chinese (Non-native Speakers) Foundation Certificate Programme in Chinese Local Language and Culture (Cantonese) Foundation Certificate Programme in Putonghua for Non-native Chinese Speakers Foundation Certificate Programme in Cantonese for Non-native Chinese Speakers Certificate Programme in Putonghua for Native Chinese Speakers Diploma Programme in Putonghua for Native Chinese Speakers Certificate Programme in Cantonese for Native Chinese Speakers Diploma Programme in Cantonese for Native Chinese Speakers In addition to language laboratory facilities with computers and learning software, CLC has a full complement of audio materials for teaching purposes.
